I don’t read the I Am Pro-Life page on Facebook, but it popped up yesterday as those things do. The Adoption-Safe Haven thread caught my eye, bringing a new insanity to Safe Haven discourse.
I am still very bad at screen shots, so this is a cut-and-paste. I

I Am Pro-Life

- As we celebrate National Adoption Month this November, let’s remember that abortion isn’t the only option for those in unexpected pregnancies. Adoption saves lives.

- Yes Adoption. Pro-Life will often say that there is no difference between a human life that is born and a life that is unborn. So if those that are born can be adopted, let the unborn be adopted as well. Pro-Life will highlight Safe Haven Laws which allow a woman to give up an unwanted baby to the government which would go into foster care until it is adopted, so allow a pregnant to give up an unwanted unborn to the government. The government can pay the woman to foster its new ward until it has been born and adopted.
- Michael Aronson – Right now, one cannot do so, but all the pieces there there to make it happen. It just needs a piece of legislation. Right now, people can adopt leftover unborn from IVF that have been put up for adoption. So if an unborn not within a woman’s body can be adopted, then why can’t an unborn that is within a woman? Yes, the physical handoff wouldn’t happen until after birth, but there is no reason why the legal responsibility has to wait until birth. And if the state would automatically put a baby left in a Safe Haven box into foster care and pay the foster parent, then there is no reason why the state can’t pay the woman to foster its new ward until it is actually born. All of the legal pieces are there. It would simply take a piece of legislation to tie them all together.
- Gene Ma If you’re talking about embryo adoption, then say embryo adoption.
- Michael Aronson – No, I am talking about adopting an unborn that is already in a woman’s body. Embryo adoption simply provides a foundation argument for allowing an unborn in a woman to be adopted.
- Michael Aronson You tell me; that’s what the anti abortion industry is talking about, since adoption of a live infant isn’t an alternative to pregnancy.
- Gene Ma that is brilliant. ( I’d still get an abortion, given the choice, but brilliant for adoption minded people).
- Aelita T Lindemann – It provides another way to convince women with an unwanted pregnancy to choose life.
- Gene Ma Are you talking about a fetus? Why can’t you say the word fetus?
- Michael Aronson – Okay… Fetus. I hope that scratches your itch.
____________
At the moment, I cannot see this absurd proposal percolating in Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Inc, and definitely not with trad safe haven advocates, but soomer-or-later somebody somewhere is gonna launch an “adopt an unborn baby” movement. If you think surrogacy is complicated, just think what kind of legal tangle this could cause!
And for the record, left-over embryhos are not adopted. They are sold. “Adoption” is just a marketing hook.
