Under current Canadian law, the abandonment of a live infant is illegal. Parents, however, can drop off infants at hospitals, but the drop-off cannot be anonymous and the cases will be investigated.
For several years baby box advocates have agitated for Safe Haven legislation and baby boxes. Currently, “Angel Cradles” are located in two Edmonton, Alberta, hospitals, and in one hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. A “Hope’s Cradle” baby box was also opened on December 3, 2021, at the Strathmore Fire Station about 50 kilometers from Calgary, Alberta—the first baby box attached to a fire station in the country. More will probably spring up. None of these boxes are related to SHBB Inc. except in spirit.
