I’ll make this quick. I won’t go into great detail but…
Several times a month I read Safe Haven Baby Box proponents declare in the news that boxes and anonymous legal abandonment are needed by “the homeless.” What the hell? Is baby abandonment –and yes, that is exactly what safe haven baby boxes promote despite the nicey-nice claim that it’s not abandonment since boxed babies are “placed into ‘loving hands'” or some such drivel–a boostrap for the homeless? I think not. It’s a boot in the head.
The latest declaration comes from Jasper Alabama Fire Chief Dante Field, during the opening of the city’s baby box on Wednesday. (July 31, 2024)
Many babies are born outside of the hospital. There’s a large homeless problem now and some of the babies that might be born are homeless and they don’t have anything to do with them,” Fields said. “They can’t take them anywhere, they might not even have transportation but us being in a centralized location, they can come here.
According to the US Department of Housing and Urban Development 1 in 500 people in the US are homeless–sheltered and unsheltered. I guess this makes state-sponsored sticking- babies-in-a- box-in-the-wall-and-walking- away OK. I hate to write trite but, America you can do better.
I am sick of homeless people and the poor being fronted off as an excuse for baby boxes. Do the citizens of Jasper or any other box city or state consider baby boxes the good deed that lets them off the hook–out of sight, out of mind — for failure to address homelessness and its causes on a local level? I don’t expect baby box corpos to switch their mission to aid the homeless, but I have yet to see any corpo baby box pusher bring up economics as the chief reason mothers relinquish their children to a box or the well-funded American adoption mill.
Out of all the things that could help the homeless, Safe Haven Baby Boxes are below the worst.
I may start a page of dumb quotes and excuses. MEEEOOOWWWWWW
