Two weeks ago I wrote a short piece about confusing headlines (and news stories) that suggest to the uninformed that traditional safe haven laws and baby boxes are the only way a parent can relinquish a child for adoption. I know this sounds completely stupid, and you wonder who would believe this absurd media frame pushing Safe Have Baby Boxes. I never underestimate the ignorance of the public, though, so I have no doubt that somebody would. Several would.
We got the same rubbish during today’s baby box blessing in Lubbock, Texas. KCBD-TV reported:
The Safe Haven Baby Box is one of two options for those who find themselves having to surrender their newborn. The other option, under the Baby Moses Law, is to surrender in person to any hospital, fire station or EMS station.
Did Gladney go out of business? Did DePelchin shut its doors? What happened to Hope Cottage, Adoption Angels, Texas Adoption Center? Did DPFS , buried in overwork and corruption, throw up its hands?
BTW, I hate to sound BBAnon, but is it a coincidence that just a day before this box opened, a 5-week old baby was dropped off in a trad safe haven surrender at another Lubbbock fire station?
