LB876 was introduced recently to the Nebraska Unicam. The bill amends the state’s traditional safe haven law to authorize the use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes at certain locations and add a 911 pick-up service for those unable to make it to the local state-designated baby dump station. It also includes a fiscal note of $65,000 in grant money to purchase the devices (boxes btw, are not purchased, but leased; $15,000 for FY 2023-24 and another $50,000 for FY 2025. AND, an additional $10,000 each year after that to “implement and maintain a public information program to inform the public on how they can abandon their newborns without getting arrested. Of course, these grants muzzle the SHBB Inc marketing claim the baby boxes cost the taxpayers not a red cent–but that claim went down a long time ago, since Indiana, New Mexico, and San Antonio are pouring public money into a private project by the millions and other states are proposing state-funding.
Bill sponsor Sen Rick Holdcroft released a Unicameral Update( press release) advertising the bill and its dire necessity. He said that last year 6 cases of abandonment of children 1-year and younger proves the need for them. I’m no mathematician, but Nebraska’s safe haven law is limited to babies 30 days and younger., and there are no news reports of 6 newborns or thereabouts being abandoned last year. Even I, a newbie cat on the baby box beat, can tell this is off.
But that’s not what I’m writing about tonight.
The press release informs us that Lucrece Bundy, an Omaha-based adoption attorney supports LB867 because….because… because (Angelika, please calm me down so I can continue)
Pregnant women often contact her office in search of resources and options..many of whom are “desperate” One of the only options for these women currently is to find somebody who will adopt her child,, having another option could alleviate the pressure and desperation they feel.
Excuse me!
I haven’t traveled much, but here in Corpus Christi, I’ ‘ve never seen a “desperate” pregnant woman or new mother place an ad in the paper or Facebook or standing at the intersection of South Staples and South Padre Island Drive holding a sign PLEASE ADOPT MY BABY. Believe me, it is not that difficult to put your kid into the grabby-hands of the adoption mill. Especially if it’s brand new.
Who IS this Lucrece Bundy? Al’s sister? Did she toke up on some jimsonweed?
As Angteliks says: MEOW!!!!!!! That’s kitty litter.

Meet my new secretary, Boba. I told you about her last time. She’s a heathen (as you can see), but a graduate of the Coastal Bend Secretarial School for Cats. I have high hopes for her future here, though she spends too much time, in my opinion, sleeping and staring mindlessly out the window for hours. She was so outraged, though, by Lucrece Bundy’s claim (see picture) that she asked if she could reply…In love and solidarity, Angelika
