Rumford, Maine, is scheduled to be the first town in the state to open a Safe Haven Baby box, but fire chief Chris Reed, who believes it is essential for the town to have one, admits that Maine has no known abandoned newborn problem:
Through his extensive research, Reed said he was not aware of any cases of abandoned babies in Rumford, or the state for that matter, and his motivation for pursuing this had nothing to do with that. He said he first came across the Baby Box concept in one of the firefighter trade magazines
My files are still in storage due to the house fire, so I can’t see what I have for Maine, but I am pretty sure that there are no reported cases of newborn discard or neonaticide since I started collecting in 2019. Surfing indicates there was a case in 1985, and I have a vague memory of a discard case in the early 2000s. I can’t find any stats on trad safe haven utilization on the Maine DHHS page or in news stories in a quick online search either.
Whenever the insurance/contractor cabal decides to complete repairs , and I move back home, I will check my Maine file and revise. (The rate it is going, that will be Christmas!).
