Keep Safe Haven Baby Boxes out of California!
AB2073 , a bill that legalizes the use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes aka newborn safety devices, was introduced recently in the California Assembly. As of this writing Assb Natasha Johnson (R-Riverside) is the only sponsor. On March 9, it was referred to the Assembly Public Safety Committee and the Assembly Judiciary Committee. It is scheduled for a hearing in the Public Safety Committee on March 24.
SB 381, a bill to restore the right of all California-born adoptees to obtain their Original Birth Certificates without restrictions or conditions, passed the Senate 35-0, and is now waiting for a referral and hearings in the Generssemby. a A. AB2073 is a direct attack on that bill.
California is the crown jewel of the Adoptee Rights Movement.

- Bill Summary: The bill amends the California Safe Haven law to authorize the installation of boxes designated by the board of supervisors at locations approved by the appropriate local governing body. The bill also provides specs for boxes; and requires that a unique, coded confidential ankle bracelet identification and medical information questionnaire, with state-mandated text, be placed in the box. All identifying information about parent(s) will be redacted from the medical information provided by them. Surrendering person(s) cannot be prosecuted for using the box. Under the California Constitution, the state will reimburse local agencies for certain costs mandated by law.
